I'm kind of glad this month's AmSAW comes out the day
after Valentine's Day. If it had come a day or two earlier, I
would have had to wax sublime on all those, well, you know, syrupy
subjects. Like hearts and Valentines and love. Not that I'm
not up to doing so, of course, because that would be ridiculous. It's just that, well, if I don't have to, I
feel a wee bit more comfortable than the other way around. |

So, this month, instead of going on and on about St. Valentine's Day and the meaning of love, sharing, and all that kind of thing, I'm going to talk a bit about reality. And the reality of our world today is this: It's tough getting published and it's even tougher getting produced. But AmSAW enjoyed--in the year 2004--more than 87 reads of books through our "Writer's Workshop" pages and more than 176 reads of scripts through the same. That's far more than 250 total reads by industry professionals--publishers and producers--combined. It's difficult to tell the results of those reads. Some things take forever to reach fruition. But so far, we know that our members and associates had 18 books published and 8 screenplays optioned by the end of last year. Several of those books are already in print, and several scripts have since gone into production. Not bad. This year, we're looking forward to doubling those numbers. We're expanding our contact base of acquiring editors and producers, increasing the frequency with which we touch someone (someone important, of course), and taking even more steps toward helping media professionals notice our members' works. All this is to say that, if you're already an AmSAW member, just wait. Your time will come. If you're not, why not? Membership is cheaper than a dozen roses and a night out on the town. (Oops, there's that Valentine's Day stuff again!) And the payoff--well, let's just say it could be greater. A lot greater. So let's make this year--you and me and AmSAW--the best ever for turning a lackluster showing into a rousing success. Let's make this a year to remember. I'm extremely encouraged by what I saw in 2004. I'm looking forward to even better things in 2005. Which leads me to just one more thought: Sit back, relax, and... Smoke if you got 'em.
