If you want to hear someone grumble about the weather,
you've come to the right place. Oh, sure, the high desert plateau of
south-central Utah dished up a beautiful spring this year. But spring
is gone now, and summer is here. Along with it come 100-plus degree
days and warm, humid nights. Heat and humidity. Does it get any better than that? When we moved here from Colorado, we'd been told that it does get hot during the summer but that it's a dry heat, which is much easier to tolerate than a wet heat. (It's true that a sauna is preferable to a steam bath, but that's another story.) So, the bottom line is that we spend a lot of time indoors. That means that we read a lot of books, watch a lot of television, and do whatever else we can that doesn't force us out into the steam bath. Luckily, more time spent indoors means more time spent writing and editing. And that's a good thing. It also means more time spent working on issues of SCRIBE! Hopefully, it shows. This month, for example, you'll find more members-only HotSpots listings, more Media, Print, and General news of interest to media professionals, and more of my carping about the role the media plays in helping to shape society. (See this month's Editorial.) And you have first crack at it all. So, if you--like we--find yourself spending more time indoors now that the heat of summer is upon us, why not put that time to good use. Write, make connections, and become more productive. That, after all, is why we're here. Smoke if you got 'em.
