Now, I know that hard disks crash. I know that systems become corrupt.
I also know that backing up data is the safest way of avoiding real
headaches when disaster strikes. What I didn't know is just how easy
it is to forget what data is backed up, where it's backed up, and just how
to go about recovering it in an emergency. Fortunately, after a couple of days of inaccessibility, our computers came back on-line, and everything was fine. We never did have to rely on our backup system for recovery, but we did make a note to see just how and where things were backed up and how to recover our data should doing so be necessary. That got me to thinking about how much data authors around the |

world lose each and every day from computer failure. After shaking off
the chills, I set about researching my own backup system. It seems
that I was better covered than I thought. Here's how my data is being
protected and how yours can be, too. Some while ago, I bought a 300 gigabyte external hard-disk drive with plug-and-play simplicity. It's a Maxtor. It sets up in only a few minutes, and once it's up and running, you can configure it to backup your data--either selective files or your complete computer--all automatically. The drive cost me $150. Now, should I experience a computer failure, I have nothing to worry about. My backup system runs once a day at 3 a.m. The next morning, everything is safely stored away on its own separate hard drive. Better still, should the data ever need to be recovered, a single button sets the recovery process in motion--all automatically. I feel better, now, knowing not only that my data is safely backed up, but also that I am capable of recovering it should the need arise. That peace of mind was certainly worth a hundred and fifty bucks to me, and I'm betting it would be to you, as well... Think about that for a minute or two as you contemplate just where you'd be if your computer suffered an unrecoverable failure. In the meantime... Smoke if you got 'em.
