07-15-02 / Two Film Producers
Join Seminar

Santa Fe, NM - Two new producers have signed on for The Producers Seminar section of The Screenwriting Conference in Santa Fe.  Added to the roster of attending producers are Brian R. Etting, founder of Garlin Pictures, and Jeff Monarch, Director of Development of Boz Productions, both of Los Angeles.  Etting has extensive experience in worldwide film financing and in productions for Lions Gate Films, HBO and MGM. Monarch helped develop the smash hit "Scary Movie" and is currently developing projects for MGM and Dreamworks.

At the seminar, budding screenwriters can pitch their stories to Etting and Monarch and eight other Hollywood execs.  "Producers requested more than a hundred scripts for evaluation at the February conference," says SCSFe Executive Director Larry N Stouffer.

The fourth annual conference will be held at the Radisson Santa Fe Oct. 4-7, 2002.  The deadline for early registration discounts is August 15.  Early registrants will also get a private script consultation with their teacher/mentor.  For information, check the Conference website, http://www.scsfe.com, or call 505.424.1501.

06-13-02 / Pitching Hollywood?
"Brands" Are "In"

This summer is shaping up as Hollywood's all-time blockbuster season.  The reason?  The latest formula for success - the "brand movie" - is working.  This summer, Hollywood will release 16 big-star, big-budget films described as brands: films that are sequels, prequels, spin-offs, franchises, or based on universally recognized characters from comic books, children's books, or video games.

America already has Spider-Man and Star Wars: Episode II, but coming soon to a multiplex near absolutely everybody will be Austin Powers 3, Scooby Doo, Men in Black II, Spy Kids 2, and Stuart Little 2. And so on.

In Hollywood terms, these are safe bets: brands work.  Cinema audiences in northern China are familiar with Terminator, and in Africa with Luke Skywalker and the Star Wars gang.  Harry Potter made $316 million in American cinemas, but it also made $638 million in the rest of the world.  The first Austin Powers made $54 million, the second $205 million.

"The two manias of the moment are to exploit franchises, and to build new ones," says Peter Bart, the editor of Variety, the trade newspaper.  "Best of all is a franchise that's a family film: that's really hot now."

05-01-02 / Popart Film Factory
Seeking New Projects

Do do that voodoo that you do so well: Producer Daniel Zirilli is looking for new blood

Daniel Zirilli, the energetic Producer/Director/Writer-Owner of Popart Film Factory, is on the prowl for good projects.  Zirilli made three films last year: he produced and directed The Stonecutter, which was made in Tahiti and written by South Seas painter Aad Van Der Heyde; he produced an urban drama called 15 to Life; and he wrote, directed, and produced Voodoo Mardi Gras, written by Carl Washington, who--along with Zirilli--wrote the script, Hot Parts, which was recently optioned by Inverness Media.  15 to Life and Voodoo Mardi Gras are being distributed by Spartan Films domestically and Vision Films internationally.

Zirilli is in the process of completing the script for his dream project, No Man Is an Island, the true story about legendary bootlegger, gunrunner, Mafia-hustler-turned-Key-West-mayor Captain Tony Tarracino.  Tarracino, you may recall, was made even more famous when fellow Key West resident, warbler Jimmy Buffet, immortalized him in song.

"I am always looking for new, lower-budgeted material," said Zirilli, "especially from writers who work on spec.  My films are getting made, so I'd say there is a better than usual chance that if I like the script, I can get it financed.  Deals I have done in the past work like this: the writer gets both both 5% of the producer's ownership share of the film and 5% of the budget, itself."

Anyone interested in contacting Zirilli can e-mail him at dzpff@earthlink.net

07-15-02 / Ms. Magazine Changes

Ms. magazine named Tracy Wood, an award-winning investigative journalist to lead the publication under its new owner, the Feminist Majority Foundation.  Wood was named editor-in-chief of the 31-year-old publication Monday by foundation chair Peg Yorkin.  Wood was most recently investigations editor for the Orange County Register. Her career includes 17 years as a reporter for the Los Angeles Times, where she reported on the Rodney King beating, the 1992 Los Angeles riots and other stories.

Wood was a combat correspondent in Vietnam for United Press International and held various other reporting and editing roles for the wire service throughout Asia before returning to the United States in 1976.  She also is co-author of "War Torn: Stories of War from the Women Reporters who Covered Vietnam," which will be published in August by Random House, and is completing another novel.

"With a seasoned investigative reporter and editor at the helm, Ms. can expose news in a way that makes news," said Eleanor Smeal, president of the Feminist Majority Foundation. "That's the ultimate goal."  The group that rescued Ms. in 1998 transferred ownership to the Feminist Majority Foundation last November.

The magazine moved its editorial offices to Los Angeles. Gloria Steinem, who co-founded the magazine in 1971, now serves as a consulting editor.  The magazine is expected to publish its first issue under its new owners this fall.  Wood said Ms. plans to feature investigative pieces as well as expand its tradition of publishing profiles and works from new fiction writers.

Ms. Magazine's new address is 433 S. Beverly Drive, Beverly Hills, CA 90212.

06-26-02 / Regional Magazine Seeking Articles

Nevada Magazine, 401 N. Carson Street, Carson City, NV 89701 (775-687-5416) is looking for reader-specific material for its print pages.  According to editor David Moore: "We're looking for good recreation, history, and hotel-casinos stories and ideas. Dining and attraction stories are welcome, too. We pay .15 - .25 cents a word for features of 1,500 - 2,500 words.  For new writers, a good option is to send a query, bio, and any clips you may have, but we welcome unsolicited manuscripts with a cover letter.  Always enclose an SASE and make sure manuscript is double-spaced.  I suggest looking thoroughly at the magazine.  Although it's the official state tourism publication, Nevada Magazine has a lot of depth and tries to give visitors a strong sense of why they should visit the state.  We cover all aspects of the state, from gaming and showgirls to ghost towns and recreation.  Each issue is designed to show a balance of the state's offerings as well as a geographic balance (we don't just cover Las Vegas).  We value writers who have fresh ideas, understand the magazine's mission, and show enthusiasm for the state (and have been here!)."  Contact Moore or associate editor Joyce Hollister at editor@nevadamagazine.com. Web site: http://www.nevadamagazine.com.  The magazine pays on publication or, when holding pieces for a lengthy period of time, on acceptance.
