Book Opening:

Vodka splattered across the headboard as the martini glass shattered with a melodic crack.  The clear liquid splotched the dark mahogany.  Shards of glass bounced with a dozen reflections of the candlelight in her bedroom.

“I’m tired of it!”

Lila’s throat felt ragged.  She struggled to voice the words practiced so many times in her head but that came out wrong anyway.  The thrown drink hadn’t been rehearsed; nevertheless, it was a satisfying manifestation of her hopelessness.  Mark sat haphazardly at the edge of the bed where he had rolled to avoid the missive.  He looked stunned, his wheat-colored hair skewed to one side of his head.

“It’s been two years, this isn’t going anywhere, and it never will.  I want you out of my life!  Go back to your nice blonde wife and perfect kids, they’re your family.”

Her lover blinked and found his composure.  “Lila, what’s wrong with you?  We talked about this.  We agreed we didn’t want to hurt anyone.  I thought we had something special.”

Bitterly, she replied, “I thought so too.  It isn’t enough, I told you that a year ago.”  Sweeping the wild tangle of black bangs out of her eyes, she added, almost imploringly, “You said you felt the same.”
