Synopsis:
Meet four University students from New York who kidnap and blackmail a
Mathematics Professor in order to force him to equate a winning formula
for Roulette. The main character, Alex, is a journalism
student--intelligent, calculating, risk-taking, optimistic, and the
instigator of just about everything imaginable.
His girlfriend, Lynette (the second character), is
the exact opposite: she has a dismal lack of intelligence but, as it
proves in the end, she is as cunning as she is untrustworthy.
Joe, the third character, is an art student and, although quiet and
reserved, represents Alex’s most realistic foe, despite the fact that he’s
Alex's best friend.
The fourth student is Malcolm, a psychology major who is always
pessimistic and a pain-in-the-ass guy despite himself.
Professor Jonathan Gail, the abducted mathematician,
although trapped at the start, agrees to work with the students
The four students manage to blackmail the Professor over an affair with
one of his female students—the teacher has a wife and two kids and can’t
jeopardize that. He agrees to play along with his abductors until he can
manage to escape, and he devises the formula. Once he realizes that it
will only work if all five of them play together, he goes into partnership
with them.
To no one’s surprise, it all works beautifully, and
the five amass a fortune from their gambling. But it all goes south when
Joe decides to rob Alex, following an affair with (and information
gathered from) Lynette. The Professor, too, has an agenda-bound affair
with her, looking for the information that will help him collect
all of the spoils.
In the
end, Joe betrays them all, stealing all the cash. After Lynette, Joe, and
Malcolm get killed, it's the Professor who walks away with the loot. But
Alex gets the real treasure—a last-scene reunion with his baby girl.
