Evil had come to Mantua destroying everything Jordan ever knew. The malevolence draws the soul takers back to the sleepy New York State village, to claim them in its embrace. Reunited with Damien and the other soul takers, Jordan must find a way to stop the evil before it devours the entire town. And she knows that, to stop the creatures, she must become like them.
Synopsis Alone in a secluded area, waiting for his time to perform, Damien ruminates about his time on earth, about his friends and family. Living as a being once human, now only existing through ingesting human souls, a soul taker, Damien is troubled by what he’s become and an uncertain future.
Damien has remained consistent in his guise as a performer in the Montreal based Cirque de Soleil. However, he knows that it will soon be time for a change.
Traveling with Damien is the lovely Taylor, a deaf-mute human girl that has been at Damien’s side for fourteen years. Found as an abandoned seven-year-old child, roaming the city streets. Psyche, the oldest of the soul takers, took Taylor as a surrogate daughter to live among the family of soul takers, allowing her to grow up and choose to remain human or become like them.
Taylor was with the family of soul takers two years before Damien, along with his love Melissa, joined them and became soul takers. Taylor’s grown wise before her years, experiencing life with a beautiful group of creatures that take in the simplicities of life without the worry of expenses or pressure of time.
Taylor witnessed the soul takers’ darkest hours with the fall of one of their own by vengeful vampires. In addition, to Joshua’s decent into madness. Joshua, beautiful, manipulative and domineering, murdered Melissa, and avenged by the mourning lover. Damien destroyed Joshua after the rape and murder of Melissa and burned down the beach house to destroy any remaining evidence of Joshua and his atrocities.
In the summer of Taylor’s twelfth year, Psyche seduced a young girl, Jordan Concland, into the realm of the soul takers. Only sixteen years old but with a soul much older, she felt a love for Psyche deeper than anything she’d known before. Her intoxicating beauty and kind nature held the rest of the soul takers in high regard for Jordan. That summer, the remaining soul takers banded with an albino vampire, Alexander to survive the attack of three malicious vampires that held nothing but contempt and prejudice for the soul takers. After the attack, Jordan was reunited with her father, Mitch, who was left behind in the small Upstate New York town of Mantua. Jordan went on living her life hoping for the return of Psyche.
In the years that followed, Taylor witnessed the separation of Sebastian and Psyche from Damien. Psyche became detached after letting go of Jordan, allowing the girl to grow to maturity and make her own choices. Given the choice to stay with Damien in the United States or travel abroad with Psyche and Sebastian, Taylor chose to be with Damien, spending the following eleven years as his anchor, his only remaining link to humanity. Now twenty-three, Taylor is a grown woman ready to make life decisions and still keeping Damien grounded.
When her roommate is found slaughtered in their apartment, the only one that can protect Taylor is Damien. The murdered girl is only a message for one purpose: to lure Damien from his docile façade he created for himself and Taylor. Now on the run, Damien and Taylor leave Montreal hoping to elude their new foe that seems to know everything about Damien.
A deliberate clue has been left for Damien. A hint of some answers to this mystery. Damien wants to make sure Taylor is safe before he pursues the quest.
Mitch Concland survived an attack of three vampires, standing together with the soul takers to have his daughter returned to him eleven years ago. Now he continues to run his own business while Jordan pursues her master’s degree at Ithaca State College. A proud single parent, Jordan’s success earns her notoriety and her silence about the events of her sixteenth year has made his life easier. He’s put behind the knowledge of the soul takers and existence of vampires to enjoy his quiet life in the rural college town of Mantua, New York. Knowing that vampires exist and creatures similar, feeding off souls instead of blood, Mitch has decided the keep the secret he and his daughter have been privy to when she turned sixteen.
A late night at the Ambassador’s Dry Cleaners, something malevolent has turned the air cold and foul. Mitch feels a presence and knows enough to heed a warning, no matter how subtle. Knowing secrets of the soul takers, seeing their magic up close, when the intense sensation fills the dark space of the shop, Mitch knows its time to leave. By the time he reaches home, Mitch knows his time has ended.
Jordan’s life changed forever the summer of her sixteenth year when she met and fell in love with her soul mate. She lived a lifetime in that short span and learned of the world that was beyond her understanding. Unlike the ageless soul takers, forever was too long for a mortal. After the fire and Jordan’s return to her father, the soul takers moved on. Damien at least said goodbye, but her lover, Psyche, the oldest of the soul takers, broke her heart by never returning for Jordan. Grown to adulthood, Jordan made her mark on the world by becoming a fashion model, leaving Mantua behind.
Years later, Jordan focused on her education and was now in her senior year at Ithaca State. Continuing to work as a model during semester breaks, hoping to meet up with her friends from the past while traveling on location, Jordan befriends a shy computer engineer at college and keeps her friend Kyle nearby while at school. His adoration for Jordan is not ignored but Jordan knows better than break his heart. When the news of her father’s death reaches Jordan, Kyle is at her side. She refuses his company to return to Mantua for her father’s funeral.
Mantua has changed very little. Her few human friends she’d left behind, make occasional appearances the more time she spends in town. A close contact after a condolence at Mitch’s funeral is Captain Tony Parker, promoted from Lieutenant, was in charge of her disappearance when she was sixteen. Tony befriended Mitch and remained friends since that time.
Later in the week, while buying groceries, Jordan sees a picture of herself and Captain Parker at Mitch’s funeral on the cover of the National Inquirer. The caption suggests the Captain questions the cause of death behind a super model father’s death.
In Michigan while on the road, Damien and Taylor find the tabloid as well. Returning to Mantua would give Taylor safe haven while Damien investigates the clues left by the murderer.
Distraught and confused about her father’s death, Jordan visits a local tavern to forget about some of her miseries for a while. The bartender recognizes Jordan. Lisa, former high school girlfriend of Jordan’s boyfriend of the time, serves Jordan the alcohol and fills in local information for the past decade.
Too intoxicated to find her way home, Jordan waits for her ride home with Lisa. However, after last call, a handsome stranger offers her a ride home. Jordan recognizes the feminine attitude and soft features. Sebastian has returned to Jordan’s time of need.
During the week following the funeral, Captain Parker has more bad news for Jordan. Someone desecrated her father’s grave and stole the body.
Jordan makes acquaintances with the local Catholic priest, Paul Jessen, which was easier than she anticipated considering her background. Fourteen years earlier, Fr. Michael Dormer raped Jordan shortly after her mother’s death. Jordan lived with the terrible secret until Damien avenged the atrocity by killed the priest before he could rape another child. However, Paul’s friendship isn’t enough to give Jordan solace. Her growing suspicions confirmed, a soul taker murdered her father and now stole the body. She doesn’t understand the message but the creatures she once considered friends are now far away strangers and not around when she needs them. She hates and loves them simultaneously. Suppressing the memories of the past with the soul takers was never easy, especially with the tainted blood of the vampire infecting her system. A rendezvous with Alexander resulted in Jordan’s ingestion of tall, handsome albino vampire. After the brush with the undead, Jordan acquired certain attributes that give her an uncanny perception of the world. Suppressing her love of Psyche was never easy and with the recent events leading to Jordan’s past, she yearns for the warmth and safety of her lover’s arms.
In bed dreaming late one night, Damien finally visits Jordan. With recent news recounted and tears shed, Damien asks to leave Taylor with Jordan and Sebastian so he can keep an appointment in a remote Alaskan village with a stranger that knows too much about all of them.
Damien acquires passage to Anaviluk from a grizzled Alaskan bush pilot that doesn’t ask many questions about a trip to a doomed village when a lot of money is handed to him. The small plane bounces through the night and raging arctic storm. Jake Ferguson seems to sense the differences in Damien. Jake knows Damien’s not from the Center for Disease Control that has labeled the village a biohazard and the government turned the air space over it a no-fly zone until the new strain of cholera can be contained. Jake has already made several trips into the village since the outbreak, shuttling scientists into the village but no one ever gets out. He informs Damien that whatever is going on in Anaviluk is not a bacterial infection. Damien obliges Jake of some rudimentary questions but keeps his identity and reason for the visit a secret.
After a rough night landing on a debris littered airstrip during the storm, Damien sets out on his own while Jake makes repairs to his plane. Once in the village, Damien understands what’s infected the villagers is not cholera, as the rest of the world believes. Isolated and in near twenty-hours of darkness, Damien finds evidence of a vampire. Unchecked, the vampire can take as many victims as the town supplies, as well as any outsiders daring enough to venture in seeking survivors.
On their own, four children have sought the warmth and necessity of the local grocery store. Damien learns their numbers were many more than the four he meets. The vampire steals away the children in the night, one by one.
Using the advantage of surprise, Damien takes all four souls of the children to increase his strength to battle the vampire or leave the creature to the elements and isolation. Damien returns to the A-1B Husky aircraft Jake pilots. He finds Jake mortally wounded and before they can taxi the Husky down the runway, the vampire attacks Damien.
Milo is one of the three vampires that had destroyed Damien’s coven house trying to kill the family of soul takers eleven years earlier. Milo makes mention of another creature that had coaxed Milo out to the village to wait for Damien and revenge, before Damien can find out who knows him so well Jake starts the plane. The single engine propeller chops Milo before he can kill Damien.
The flight back to civilization is dangerous without some of the controls that Milo sabotaged, hoping to ground the Husky and trapping Damien in Anaviluk. Damien takes a hard¾fast course in aeronautics to fly the plane since Jake is too injured to pilot. Near the small arctic city Kotzebue, leveling out over Kotzebue Sound, Damien loses control of the Husky and crashes into the bay.
Back in Mantua, Jordan finds herself deep involved in the mystery because of her connection to the soul takers. Even with Sebastian and Taylor to keep her company, she feels her life is turned up side down. A phone call from the mysterious male guides Jordan to the local hospital. To keep harm from Jordan, Sebastian joins her along with Taylor.
Upon entering the hospital, the first floor is deserted. Wandering through the triage and ER, heading deeper into the medical facility, their route is cut off when the power goes out. As the back-up emergency lights come on, they find the way back blocked by a creature in a black hooded cloak.
Jordan, Sebastian and Taylor waste no time heading for the stairs. The stairwell is littered with corpses of medical staff and patients. Bodies are thrown into the confined space like so much garbage. Cutting off the available exit, disoriented from the lacking of the knowing the hospital layout, the soul taker and humans are driven deeper into the hospital. The scent of antiseptic and death permeates the air-conditioned halls. At the other end of a corridor, the whine of elevators catches Jordan’s attention and she propels herself forward, hoping the creature was still making its way up the stairwell.
As the elevator doors open, Jordan is surprised to see Alexander waiting for them inside the lift. Rather than question his reason for being at the hospital, Jordan accepts his help and they escape through the basement exit for the morgue.
With the unlikeliness of Alexander being untrustworthy, Jordan listens to his reasoning when it comes to why he’s made a sudden appearance in Mantua. Seeing Jordan’s face in the tabloid and coming to Mantua as a friend, he now knows his identity as a vampire is threatened because of the senseless murder at the hospital. So much death would bring forensic experts to investigate the corpses. If there’s any evidence this creature is a vampire or a soul taker, someone will soon know what it took centuries to suppress from public scrutiny. Alexander remains in Mantua for more personal raison d'être.
The next morning before dawn light creeps into the house, Jordan discovers the body of her close friend, Kyle from college. The dying boy had been deliberately dragged into her father’s bedroom and slaughtered. Sebastian, Taylor and Alexander witness Jordan cradle Kyle while Jordan pleads with Alexander to save his life. When most of the blood pours out of the boy’s body, Jordan is left holding another victim of her friendship with the soul takers. Alexander offers to return Kyle’s body to Ithaca where it will be discovered somewhere other than Jordan’s house. Sensible measures need to be taken to remove all evidence linking his killing to Jordan. Stripping the bedding, pulling up the carpet and removing the mattress, Sebastian, Taylor and Jordan clean the bedroom. Jordan rents a U-haul to load the soiled furniture and rug remnants to haul to the dump. While Sebastian finishes the cleaning, Jordan and Taylor take the U-haul to the city dumb some miles out of town. It’s nightfall by the time Jordan and Taylor reach the dump. Jordan breaks open the gate and drives into the landfill where they can dispose of the evidence.
At the dump, Taylor and Jordan work hard and fast to empty the U-haul. A tremendous thundering overhead, someone jumps on the top of the box truck, then unmistakable footsteps cross the roof make Jordan and Taylor wait in fear as they watch the back of the truck, someone hops down from the top. After a moment, a ghastly white face and hands come into view. Before they can react, the creature, now visibly a female, rushes them, knocking Taylor unconscious, her head striking the side of the truck. Before Jordan can defend herself, the female creature rushes her and threatens to slit her throat. Another moment and the female are yanked away from Jordan, dragged from the truck. A fight outside the truck lasts only an instant before a vision from Jordan’s past comes into the box truck to see if Jordan and Taylor are safe. Psyche, ageless and still beautiful, insists they move fast before the female returns. After helping Taylor into the cab of the truck, Psyche returns to her car and Jordan follows her back to pick up her own car. Overwhelmed by Psyche’s sudden appearance and her seeming insensitivity to Jordan’s feelings, Psyche is radiant but cold.
Home again, Jordan can’t keep her eyes off her once lover, Psyche. Even after eleven years, Jordan’s heart still beats for the soul taker. Reeling, over the reappearance and ordeal at the dump, Jordan goes up to bed to be alone. Somewhere near dawn, Jordan wakes to a presence in her bedroom. Knowing its Psyche come to ask forgiveness for being away for so long, Jordan does not turn to her but says some things she needs to get off her chest. Expecting a response but getting only silence, Jordan turns to look at Psyche.
Before she understands, what she sees in her bedroom is not Psyche but a dark lurking figure in a hooded cloak. Moving too fast to breathe, the creature jumps onto the bed, pinning Jordan to the bed. Unable to see the face, Jordan has to endure the groping and foul odor while he tells her that he will wait a little while longer for Damien. Now that Psyche has arrived, he will kill them one by one. Jordan losing consciousness because the creature’s hand against her mouth and nose don’t allow her to breathe.
Later in the morning, when the sun is shining through the bedroom window, Jordan wakes to find Psyche in the room. Jordan tells her of the visit by the creature and is angry with the soul taker for not coming to her aide sooner. Pining for eleven years, Jordan’s abandonment issues with Psyche make Jordan break down. A tsunami of aggravation and heartache wash out of Jordan to rage against Psyche. Afterward, Psyche leaves and Jordan has time to organize her thoughts and reflect of the personal attacks against her. When Psyche returns to Jordan’s house with first class plane tickets to Hawaii for Jordan and Taylor. Psyche wants Jordan and Taylor safe. Jordan agrees it’s a good idea to leave until the soul takers can work out the problem with these new creatures.
Ready to board the overnight flight leaving Syracuse airport, Jordan feels running away, leaving the responsibility for finding her father’s body, and the closure with Psyche, along with the burden of the creatures is too much to leave. Without having to convince Taylor they’re doing the wrong thing, she’s ready to return to Mantua to endure anything in hopes to see Damien again.
Once back in town, driving toward the house, Jordan sees the main doors to the Catholic Church open to the night. Fearing for Paul Jessen, Jordan doesn’t hesitate to run into the church while Taylor warns against the blatant disregard for her personal safety. Though she has common sense, Taylor follows Jordan into the dark of the church, weary of the possible danger. Lying on the floor near the altar, dressed in a cassock, a body waits for them. Running up to the figure, Jordan registers the subtle difference between a grown man and the svelte form of a slender girl. Before Jordan can back away, the girl that attacked them at the dump, assaults Jordan. Not understanding because of the swiftness of the attack, Jordan feels as if her life is pouring out of her and she loses consciousness.
Disoriented and listless, Jordan tries to pull together the loss of time and new location where she finds herself now: a windowless foreign bathroom, lying inside a bathtub, Jordan lifts her body up in the near dark. She feels strange, a difference her body weight and the coolness of the ceramic tiles under naked feet made her wonder what has happen to her. Even in the dark, she can see all around her. The burning of hunger inside her body and cramping muscle pain cannot be ignored. A blinding, scorching light makes Jordan cringe and crouch on the floor near the bathtub. When the light is snuffed out, Jordan looks to Taylor who has just come through the door to check on Jordan. Taylor can’t see in the dark and Jordan’s ravenous hunger drives Jordan to seize Taylor, takes down Taylor and bites into her flesh to draw out the hidden nectar, the source of Jordan’s thirst. Taylor’s fighting is useless against Jordan’s newfound strength. From behind, cold steely hands pull Jordan from Taylor, and Alexander warns Jordan that killing her friends will not be in her best interest.
Now Jordan understands the changes within her body. Alexander has saved her life after the mortal wound inflicted when the female slashed her throat. Reborn a vampire, Jordan has to learn how to cope with the hunger while feeling an ever present abyss growing between her and Psyche now that Jordan has become something Psyche loathes.
The return of Damien signifies the catalyst of events that the creatures were waiting for. The group now complete, the male creature makes his presence know by throwing the body of the dead priest through the living room window of Jordan’s house and kills Sebastian before the entire clan of soul takers and Alexander and Jordan. Forced to leave her home and the bodies behind, Jordan, Damien, Taylor, Psyche and Alexander take flight, driving out of Mantua to reorganize their thoughts and plan for their next encounter with the creatures.
Distraught and confused, Jordan feeds off Psyche rather than risk leaving the hotel room to take a victim. Psyche shares her light, her soul with Jordan and takes light back from Jordan as she feeds. A new change happens within her body and Jordan learns the secret of the creatures. Birthed from soul takers and vampires, these creatures are stronger and faster than either parent species. Now Jordan has become like them.
Sneaking out of the hotel room she shares with Psyche, Jordan slips unnoticed into Damien’s room. While Taylor sleeps at his side, she shares a plan with Damien. It’s time to stop running and face their demons. Waiting for the creatures to find them is not what Jordan has in mind. Proposing Damien slip away with Jordan to return to Mantua, entices him with the prospect of becoming a new species altogether. Still fearing possible physical complications once turned into something more than soul taker and vampire, Damien agrees to join Jordan knowing with or without him, she would return to Mantua anyway.
In a seedy motel room on the road to Mantua, Jordan turns Damien into the creature she’s become. Still reeling from the effects of the change, Damien doesn’t have to recuperate before returning to Mantua. He knows, as does Jordan, the best place to hide in Mantua would be inside the catacombs. Deciding to check the sub floor of the Catholic Church, they find no evidence of the creatures. The tunnel opening leading into the underground catacombs eleven years ago had been sealed in concrete. The only other possible opening leading into the catacombs is the abandoned parochial school across Main Street. Damien knows from years before the tunnels intersect with the sewage system and could potentially lead miles under the city.
Making their way into the school, down to the basement, scanning the furnaces and structure, the foundation walls are sound. Then far off, voices waver in whispering heat dispute. A break in the cinderblock foundation Jordan and Damien catch fragments of an argument from the creatures somewhere deep within the catacombs. The acoustics of the black space carry the whispers.
Jordan and Damien quickly make their way back to the main floor of the derelict school to huddle inside a vandalized classroom and discuss the location of the creature’s hideout. Feeling overwhelmed by the responsibility of dispatching the creatures, Jordan suggests they need weapons, a better plan, and more numbers. Leaving the classroom, they’re discovered and blocked in either direction to escape. Damien and Jordan race upstairs and into a classroom on the second floor and blindly jump through the large panel window. Once on the ground, Damien recovers quicker than Jordan and bounds over the security fence to the sidewalk. Before Jordan can manage the jump, the creatures capture her and drag her back to their lair. Damien feels the need to get help before pursuing them.
In the dark tunnels, Jordan feels that even if she broke free she couldn’t find her way back as well as the creatures that had already spent more time in the catacombs than she’d like to think about. Locked in a small chamber underground with a single candle as the only source of light, the female finally sheds the cloak as Jordan waits with the girl and the male guards the only way out of the room.
Damien meets up with Alexander and Psyche who scold him on his carelessness but agree to help rescue Jordan. They make their way to the church. Together they break through the barrier under the church, the way into the catacombs in hopes to take the creatures by surprise. Once inside the tunnels, Psyche is dragged off by the male creature from behind the moment Alexander’s throat is sliced open by the female creature. Damien rushes off in the direction of the male hoping to save Psyche.
Jordan wakes after the male rapes and leaves her for dead. Disoriented, she wanders into the catacombs. The female creature meets up with Jordan and is surprised to see she’s alive. Before she attempts to kill Jordan, she listens to Jordan’s recanting of the past and how the male creature has misled the girl. Jordan understands the female’s animosity toward Damien. After listening to the female’s retelling of how Damien killed her mother and how the male creature saved her so she could take revenge on Damien, Jordan knows the lies the male told the girl. She believes that Damien’s cruelty destroyed the male creature’s love, his soul mate, raped and murdered the girl. And when the male returned to the beach house he found his lover dead and Damien ready to murder the male. Damien burns the male alive in the fire that consumes the beach house. The story is old; Jordan has heard it before, but not the version as told by the male to the girl. Knowing Damien for over eleven years, she knows he’s incapable of such coldhearted viciousness when it comes to death. He is not a rapist. However, this story from another perspective is exactly the kind of sadistic nature that Jordan had been told about. Jordan tells the girl the version she heard from Psyche where it was Damien who lost the soul mate and avenged her death by killing the one who raped and murdered his lover. Somehow, Joshua apparently survived the assault and the fire, at a cost of his charred carcass.
Back in the hallowed halls of the rich architecture of the Catholic Church, Damien comes face to face with the male creature. After Psyche’s body drops on top of Damien from the balcony, he’s unsure if she’s still alive. Moving fast, pulling Psyche out of the way, the creature lands where her head had been a moment before. The boot kicks Damien’s face as fast as he focuses on it. A second volley cracks his ribs and sends him careening down the aisle toward the altar. After a fight between Damien and Joshua, Damien is gored by Joshua with a knife and falls. Then he’s stabbed again in the shoulder, chest and thigh. Joshua turns the blade before ripping the knife from Damien’s leg. Incapacitated, Damien listens to Joshua reveal his identity. Once thought dead, burned after a horrific battle, the soul taker lived, scarred and changed by the blood of a vampire. Joshua used his years to torture Damien and the ones he loves. Adding more pain to Damien’s grief, Joshua hints at the identity of the female. Damien’s worst fear is that he’d acted prematurely all those years ago. Thinking Melissa, his lost love still lives are too much for Damien. To think she had helped destroy his loved ones makes no sense to Damien. Had Joshua tainted her soul with his vengeful poison?
Hearing some of Joshua’s confession when they entered the church, Jordan stands in the balcony where the girl led her. She watches the female retreat into the shadows after hearing the truth from Joshua’s mouth and leaves him, Damien and Jordan.
Using the element of surprise, Jordan launches herself into the air, landing on top of Joshua. She wastes no time using every bit of her new strength to kill him. She rips open his chest and tears out his heart to make sure he’s finally dead. Afterward, Jordan allows Damien to feed from her to rebuild his strength. Psyche comes to her as Jordan loses consciousness from the battle and sapped strength.
Once it’s all over, Jordan visits Captain Parker to inform him where her father’s body can be located. He sees the change in Jordan but doesn’t ask a lot of questions. With the multitude of deaths in the hospital, the government has taken over the case. Tony explains that it’s not his problem any more. He informs Jordan that Sebastian’s body will be transported from the city morgue. He wishes Jordan well before she seems to disappear.
Reuniting with Psyche, Jordan feels confident they can make their love survive and have forever to try.
Damien meets up with Taylor at a bus station in Niagara Falls. They find a motel room to finally consummate their love Afterward, while lying in Taylor’s arms; Damien feels the temperature change in the room when a window is soundlessly opened. Before he can react, the girl is before him.
Exchanging words, Damien thinks his lost love has finally returned to him. He embraces the girl believing she is Melissa. Seeing Taylor reflected in the mirror as she’s about to smash the nightstand against Melissa, Damien cries out. Lightning fast, the girl plunges the knife blade deep into Taylor’s chest. Why would Melissa want to kill Taylor? Why would she have such resentment? Joshua’s poison changed the girl. The realization happens as fast as the recognition. The girl is not Melissa, she’s Damien’s sister, Tina. She had endured hell to take revenge on Damien for killing their mother. A lie perpetuated by Joshua. Unstable, Tina slips out the same window she’d breached.
Damien uses his newly discovered powers to breathe life back into Taylor to turn her into something he once was, a soul taker. Having her with his always, Damien’s ready to live again.
