It's an attractive
enough scenario, isn't it? You can't find an agent to represent you
and your literary works, which means you can't find a conventional
publisher to publish your literary works, which means you're forced to go
through life a frustrated, unpublished writer.
What's a guy to do?
Publish your own
eBooks. Cut out the middle man. Cut out the profit-takers.
Make a small fortune.
Right? |
|
Right! At least, that's what a lot of people would have you
believe. But are they just blowing in the wind, or are they really
onto something? Whenever I hear about something that sounds too
simple, too lucrative, too good to be true, a little red flag pops up
inside my cranium. Sure, eBook publishing is attractive. It's
also potentially career-ending. For every successful eBook published, there
are thousands--maybe even tens or hundreds of thousands--that fall by the
wayside.
So, if you've thought about publishing your own eBooks but aren't sure
whether or not that's the right road for you to pursue, let me give you
the answer once and for all.
Absolutely.
Perhaps.
The truth is,
I don't know for sure. Not yet.
But I'm going to find out. In fact, the editors at AmSAW have begun a test of eBook publishing, of the rate of success vs. failure, of the advantages
versus the disadvantages. And when we come up with the results,
we're going to share them with you. No bull, no nonsense, no vested
interests.
My gut feeling? I think the disadvantages will outweigh the
advantages by far. But, that said, I want to know for sure,
once and for all.
So, as they used to say in the advertising world, "Watch This Space."
Watch it for the results of a study, a test, a live demonstration of just
how successful our eBook publishing venture turns out to be. Or
how disappointing. Coming soon to a theater near you.
In the meantime...
Smoke if you got 'em.
